KEVIN CLARKE HANGS WITH ANDY POWELL HERE ON JRL
JRL Fans, I am please to present one of the greatest directors of gay xxx films in the United States, Mr. Kevin Clarke. I am so happy the great one himself has joined us today and so let me shut up and get right down to it;
ANDY You have given gay consumers some of the hottest and steamiest gay xxx twink films of al time. What's your secret? What lets you know that you've got it and there is no need to reshoot!
KEVIN There was a famous porn star named Al Parker who said “I do not need to tell the models how to have sex I just stand back and shoot it” The is the essence of what I do. 95% of the models I shoot are first time models and the way I approach it is have them choose a partner and do what they would do were I not there and I shoot it. My idea of directing is “Move your hand”. When you are using a first time model you cannot choreograph sex as they are really performers yet. Nerves take over. However put two young men together naked and nature tends to direct. I try and shoot in real time and am not fond of re-shoots. That brings you varying results all different and unpredictable. Like sex in real life. Believe it or not, not every sexual encounter involves mutual rimming and anal sex. I try to get the models to explore their sexuality on camera, and while one can say I wish I had seen that that is not the type of porn I shoot.
ANDY How do you find your models? Do you put ads in newspapers or internet emails or do you get lucky and find them in a nightclub or in a cafe?
KEVIN Through the years how I have found models has changed as life has. It is more net orientated now, as people you would never have access too are putting their persona’s out there online. As for nightclubs and café’s I have never walked up to a guy and said would you do porn. I can’t imagine that. I know people do but I don’t like the idea of bringing that reality to a stranger like that. I also get many referrals from former models.
ANDY Your models are natural, not plastic! Your release Seduction of A Surfer [2004] brought your fans one of the hottest blowjobs scenes of all time. The natural cumshot he gave, so spontaneous...it's was mouth watering. Do you coach them or do you allow them to get into each other before shooting the scene?
KEVIN I do try and get “real” looking models, the guy bagging groceries or working in the store. I do not use a gym-rat cookie cutter approach to models. I think that distinguishes my work from that of other directors. You will see models that only did one video that stepped outside their everyday life and did this one scene and stepped back on to their real life. The scene you are referring too was a straight boy who had never been with a guy and the result was a tension and excitement that I was very proud to shoot. You can’t choreograph that kind of action/re-action thing and when you get it, it is amazing. The boy came three times the first about 15 seconds into the blow job hw was horrified apologizing for coming so quickly and myself and the other videographer Brian Brennan of Latino Fan Club fame thought if only you knew how much of out lives we have waited for cumshots you would realize we should be thanking you.
ANDY Ever since you signed your IOP Production comany with the great Global Media Distribution, who by the way was the original exclusive distributor for the Famed Latino Fan Club Label and currently distributes Blatino Connection, B.C. Productions, Street Life Productions, East Harlem Homeboyz, and the Award Winning Liquid Dreamz Entertainment under their belt, have they given you the support base that you were in search for to get your product out to wholesalers, retailers and gay consumers of porn?
KEVIN Beyond my wildest expectations. I was visiting a friend in the office down the hall from them two years ago and my friend said we have friends on this floor in your business and introduced us. There are two things that make Global Media special. One is that they do not interfere on what I do they trust my judgment, and the second and most important is that they SELL. Other distributors sit back and wait for the sales to come to them but at Global Media they are on the phone constantly and they are not afraid to make a deal.

KEVIN Support your favorite filmmakers and companies and you will continue to see what it is you like. There is a tremendous amount of Piracy out there and if people can’t make the money to pay models and produce quality product it will disappear. And of course Play Safe.
ANDY How did you get into this business in the first place?
KEVIN I was in the right place at the right time. William Higgins had receded from the scene and left me an opening in the twink genre that I was able to fill. Something Very Big [1998] was said by many to re-invent the genre. The market back then was not as diverse as it is now; there was no streaming video online. There was not a place for the Sean Cody’s and the Corbin Fisher’s of today. I think that the road to success is more crowded but if you make a good product there will always be a market for it. You can look at one of my projects and tell almost instantly that I shot it. You can look at my models and see real guys, not processed shaved clones. I think that the sex I shoot is as good as any out there. The first scene on Somethings Much Bigger has the best sex I have ever seen recorded, they were real-life bf’s and it was torrid to say the least.
ANDY What are the plans for IOP Productions and Global Media Distribution for the summer of 2006?
KEVIN I am planning on Installment 4 of my American Way series The American Way 4 (The Pretty Boys) focusing on the pretty-boys side of things for a video.
