EAST HARTFORD, CT – The prestigious Goodwin College has bought two buildings on Main Street for $535,000. The plans are to convert them to administrative and/or instructional space, a college official told JRL CHARTS.
The purchase of 349 and 351 Main St. was completed on Wednesday June 22, 2011. The building at 349 Main is now occupied by Adult Video store Aircraft Book & News. Goodwin college will close the store, and the property while being assessed to determine the best use for the space, according to Todd Andrews, vice president of college relations.
Goodwin spokesman Matthew Engelhardt told JRL CHARTS that the buildings, totaling about 5,000 square feet of space, were homes at one point but were later converted to commercial use for lease. Andrews stated that Goodwin College’s first priority is to address any security and general maintenance issues on the properties. The closing of the adult bookstore and renovation of the buildings will benefit the area, he said.
“This is part of our commitment to the neighborhood and East Hartford, and to help in stabilizing the neighborhood,” Andrews said. Goodwin College has made similar acquisitions in the past, such as 401 Main St., which used to be a bank, and the former youth services offices at 2 King Court. Those spaces were converted to office and instructional use, Engelhardt said.
No word as to if Aircraft Book & News adult video will open up in a different location.
